How to Make Brazil Nut Milk for Glowing Skin

How to Make Brazil Nut Milk for Glowing Skin

It is so simple and satisfying to make your own nut milk and quite frankly I enjoy it much more than store bought nut milks because I know exactly what I am putting into it and what is also NOT going into it. Did you know that when you buy store-bought nut milks, there are usually in fact very few nuts in it. It is mostly watered down sadly and therefore the nutritional benefits are greatly diminished.

In fact, the beauty of this recipe (pun intended) I am going to give you is two-fold.

First, the superfoods that are added to the recipe to combine with the brazil nuts make it even more nutritious than just plain brazil nut milk PLUS it is the fact that brazil nuts are so very good for us. Let's find out why I love brazil nuts as much as I do.

I mean, I am a skincare formulator after all in case you didn't yet know. This means I love all things skin and you must also since you are taking the time to read this blog.

Being a women in her forties, I actually specialize in formulating pro-aging natural skincare specifically for women in their 40s, including natural deodorant for women (and men & teens too) that is free of aluminum and harmful toxins because what we put ON our body also goes IN our body!

Why We Don't Say Anti-Aging

We don't use the negative words you often hear calling skin care products anti-aging. We simply don't believe in shaming women about getting older.

Proaging in a positively healthy way

When you are in your 40s, your skin and body has different needs both topically and nutritionally. I love it when I can find solutions that address my skin concerns naturally through great skin care and nutrition that feeds healthy skin and creates a healthier body. I want all women to #findyour40 and to feel really good about your skin health at this critical juncture in your life.

What Makes Brazil Nuts Good For Us?

Brazil nuts contain a heck of a lot of selenium in every single nut, in fact they contain 68-91mcg per nut. As adults, we need 55mcg per day at a minimum to be healthy with 400mcg being the upper limit before you overdose, so this means the recommended amount of brazil nuts to eat each day is no more than four. I've always used the rule of thumb as two brazil nuts each day.

The reason I prioritize selenium in my diet is because I have hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) and selenium helps to boost and balance your thyroid hormones and second because I always strive to have gorgeous, glowing skin throughout my forties and quite frankly this is my wish for my lifetime.

Being a natural skincare formulator and also a skin nutrition coach, I am always searching for ways to keep my skin, and yours, looking healthy and glowing naturally through food and choosing to use excellent quality, clean skincare products.

What is selenium and what does it do?

According to the National Institutes of HealthSelenium is a nutrient that the body needs to stay healthy. Selenium is important for reproduction, thyroid gland function, DNA production, and protecting the body from damage caused by free radicals and from infection.

Selenium is one of the critical nutrients that our skin needs in order to be healthy. Remember, the skin is our largest organ. And its function is much more important than most people think. Not only does it determine how healthy we look on the outside, it is said that the skin is the passageway to our overall health, but it also serves a much more important role than that.

Why Should We Care About Our Skin Anyway?

The skin's purpose is much more than the superficial skin level of the epidermis (the top outermost layer of skin). It also serves to keep our body heat inside, to protect us from illness and disease by forming a protective barrier, to keep us hydrated by keeping the water content of our body inside where it belongs, and to protect our organs.

People always assume the skin is only for superficial aesthetics purposes but I hope with these few examples you can see that the skin serves a much more important function than pure vanity.

About the Brazil Nut Hemp Matcha Milk Recipe

Before we get to my recipe I want to share that it actually contains two more ingredients that I love to have in my diet often: hemp and matcha. Let's start with hemp and why I have added them is because hemp contains healthy fats, in fact hemp seeds contain over 30% fat. They are exceptionally rich in two essential fatty acids, linoleic acid (omega-6) and alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3). They also contain gamma-linolenic acid, which has been linked to several health benefits.

Hemp seeds are a great protein source, as more than 25% of their total calories are from high-quality protein. That is considerably more than similar foods like chia seeds and flaxseeds, whose calories are 16–18% protein.

Hemp seeds are also a great source of vitamin E and minerals, such as phosphorus, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfur, calcium, iron and zinc (Trusted Source). These are also minerals that help contribute to healthier looking skin. Another reason to eat more hemp seeds!

superfoods for skin

Matcha green tea powder contains plant compounds called catechins which is what green tea is best known for as they provide antioxidant power to keep your body healthy and free of illness.

Brazil Nut Hemp Matcha Milk Recipe

And finally here is the recipe. This will yield about 4 cups of brazil nut milk.

Tools required:

A high speed blender such as a Vitamix.

A nut milk bag or cheesecloth or an used pair of panty hose.

Ingredients:

1 cup Brazil Nuts

4 cups Fresh Filtered Water

1/2 cup Hemp Seeds

2 Medjool Dates

1/2 tsp Himalayan sea salt

1 tsp Matcha Tea Powder

Method:

Soak the brazil nuts in the water for 6-8 hours or overnight to remove the anti-nutrients and to soften the nuts to be able to blend them well.

Drain the nuts and replace with 4 cups of fresh filtered water.

Add the nuts and water to the blender. Blend for 1 minute.

Add the medjool dates (take the pit out first!), hemp seeds, sea salt and matcha powder.

Blend again for 1 minute or until chunks are gone.

Strain through the nut bag or whatever you are using for straining.

Bottle it up and put in the fridge.

Use it all up within 3-4 days. Shake well to mix before use each time.
